Questions: Care home

October 2009

Asking the right questions is an important step towards getting the right care.

If you're considering moving into a care home, you might find it useful to ask any prospective home the following questions:

  1. Do you encourage residents to make choices about as many aspects of their daily lives as they can?
  2. Will you allow me to choose my food and where I eat it? Can I choose my own bedtime?
  3. What is your policy on visitors? Are there facilities for overnight stays? Can visitors eat privately with the resident they are visiting?
  4. Do you organise a range of activities and visits that match the abilities of your residents?
  5. What steps will you take to protect my privacy and property? Are personal items marked and identified?
  6. What arrangements will you make for me to handle my own financial affairs, where possible?
  7. How will you let my family or friends know if I fall ill?
  8. What will happen if I need more care? Will I have to leave the home, and if so how will this be managed?
  9. Do you encourage residents to help with day-to-day tasks such as cleaning and gardening?
