Press releaseERNIE on the airwaves18 February 2005BBC Radio 4 documentary coming soon
Science, finance and emotion mix in a BBC Radio 4 programme about a very special machine which has found its way into the affections of the British public since 1956, the year Premium Bonds were launched. This object of desire is ERNIE – Electronic Random Number Indicator Equipment – which represents the hopes and dreams of 23 million people, giving away more than £68 million in prizes each month to lucky winners all around the UK. In this programme, Tom Standage, technology editor at the Economist, traces the history of ERNIE up to the fourth version of the machine which was launched last year and tells the story of his unique design and those who have tended and cared for him over the years. The programme also looks at the strangely personal relationship between the machine and generations of Britons who have received more than 118 million prizes worth £7.5 billion in the last 50 years. The Number Cruncher is a Whistledown production for BBC Radio 4. ENDS Notes to editors NS&I was founded in 1861 to enable the British public to save in a straightforward, accessible and secure way.
