Press release£5 PREMIUM BOND FROM 1965 WINS £5,000 PRIZE 03 December 2004A mystery winner from Nottinghamshire who has just £15 in Premium Bonds has won a £5,000 tax-free prize in this month’s draw with a £5 Bond bought nearly 40 years ago in November 1965. It is one of 95 prizes of £5,000 awarded to lucky winners across the UK and one of three prizes of £5,000 awarded to winners in the Nottinghamshire region in the December Premium Bond prize draw, which is operated by National Savings and Investments (NS&I). In this month’s draw, one lucky winner in the county also won a £25,000 prize with a £5,000 Premium Bond purchased in December 1998. Since the £1 million jackpot was introduced in 1994, two very lucky Nottinghamshire residents have netted the top prize; the first in June 2000 and the second just four months later in October. In Nottinghamshire more than 350,000 people hold Premium Bonds worth £323 million. However, more than 3,000 prizes worth nearly £180,000 remain unclaimed, including five worth £1,000 each. There is no time limit on claiming prizes and, with Christmas approaching, a windfall could prove useful. Sally Swait, Premium Bond manager at NS&I, said: “This goes to show that older Premium Bonds do win prizes and you don’t have to own the maximum amount to win something.” Customers who own Premium Bonds and think they may have any unclaimed prizes can use the Premium Bond prize checker on the NS&I website at www.nsandi.com – customers simply need to enter their Premium Bond holder’s number. “And,” adds Sally, “with so much money lying unclaimed, we would encourage people in Nottinghamshire who own Premium Bonds to use our website to find out if any of these unclaimed prizes are theirs.” ENDS Notes to Editors Premium Bonds were launched in 1956 and £25 billion has been invested by more than 23 million people over the years. Each month, NS&I runs a prize draw and awards over 1 million prizes. In the December 2004 draw, the total prize fund exceeded £67 million. The minimum investment is £100 and the maximum is £30,000 per person. Customers who have lost their Premium Bonds or do not know their holder’s number can use NS&I’s free tracing service. A brochure and form can be downloaded from the NS&I website or requested by calling NS&I on 0845 964 5000. For more information, contact the NS&I media team
