Press releaseTHE PREMIUM BOND NUMBER CRUNCHER FOR THE 21ST CENTURY06 August 2004
Science meets finance at the launch of the new fourth generation ERNIE, National Savings & Investments’ unique machine that has picked 110 million prize-winning numbers and given away £7 billion since 1957. This very special event will, for the first time, bring together all four generations of ERNIE (Electronic Random Number Indicator Equipment), including the first built in 1956. The visual display will show how technology has become faster and smaller for a British institution over nearly 50 years. Every month, 23 million people with £25 billion invested place their trust and hopes in ERNIE randomly picking their winning Premium Bond numbers, including the £1 million jackpot. In the last 10 years Premium Bonds have undergone a renaissance with a six-fold increase in the number of bonds in the draw (from £4 billion in 1994 to £25 billion), calling for a faster, more innovative machine to randomly generate the million prize winning numbers each month. The exhibition will be on display for one day only.
