Press releaseNS&I LAUNCHES GROWING GARDENS TODAY COMPETITION FOR ASPIRING GARDEN DESIGNERS13 November 2008
NS&I (National Savings and Investments) today announced its Growing Gardens Today competition to be held at BBC Gardeners’ World Live 2009, in association with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). For the second year running, gardening design enthusiasts are invited to design a garden around NS&I’s theme: Growing Gardens Today. The key focus of the garden design must include a modern approach to growing fruit and vegetables. Three lucky winners will be selected to receive a £5000 grant to build a 25m2 garden for display in the “Grow Your Own” area at BBC Gardeners’ World Live 2009 (10-14 June 2008) at the NEC Birmingham. This is a unique competition and the only one in the “Grow Your Own” area of the show. The competition entries should be innovative and modern garden designs that consider sustainability, good environmental practices, diversity and recycling. The 2008 winner, chosen by public vote, Claire Potter, created a garden that illustrated growing vegetables around the three R’s: reduce, reuse and recycle. Her garden displayed the possibilities that come from thinking imaginatively, having fun with growing your own and recycling. Claire Potter said, “I wanted to create a garden that was fully sustainable as well as beautiful, so I incorporated over three dozen different varieties of vegetables, and used only reclaimed, recycled or ‘eco’ products. I was delighted when the public voted me to win the competition, which shows the relevance of sustainable design. Winning the competition also gave me a platform to launch Claire Potter Design, a sustainable interior and exterior design practice.” A natural partnership Tim Mack, Head of Marketing and Communications at NS&I commented, “NS&I is proud to be supporting the Growing Gardens Today competition for the second year at BBC Gardeners’ World Live 2009. We are confident that this will encourage even more people to the possibilities of gardening and horticulture. As a supporter of the RHS Grow Your Own campaign we are pleased to be working closely with the RHS. Growing Gardens Today aims to capture encourage and nurture new talent. To enter applicants must be 18 or over and should design a garden which is no more than 25m2 and the design’s key focus should be fruit and vegetables. Applicants must supply design drawings and plans by 23 January 2009. The winners will be chosen by a judging panel of NS&I and RHS representatives and will receive a £5000 grant to help them create their own design.
