Press release2006 BONDS MAKE MILLIONAIRES IN SEPTEMBER’S JACKPOT DRAW01 September 2008
In Somerset over 238,000 people own Premium Bonds, worth in total approximately £458 million. There are also 3,436 unclaimed Premium Bond prizes in the area worth a total of £210,725. The average value of each unclaimed prize in Somerset is just over £61. While in Manchester over 790,000 people own Premium Bonds, worth a total of over £1 billion. There are also 16,934 unclaimed Premium Bond prizes in Manchester, worth a total of £979,975 with an average value of almost £58 each. In September’s draw ERNIE paid out over 1.6 million prizes, together amounting to more than £104 million in value. There were 36,808,246,836 eligible Bonds that could have won a prize.
The current Premium Bonds prize fund rate is 3.40% tax-free2. The current odds of each £1 Bond number winning any prize are 22,000 to 1, so with average luck an investor with £30,000 in Premium Bonds could win 16 tax-free prizes a year. Currently 23 million people have a total of £36 billion invested in Premium Bonds. Premium Bonds can be bought online at www.nsandi.com, by telephone on 0500 007 007, by post and over the counter at Post Office® branches, and brochures can be picked up in WHSmith in 400 of its High Street stores and 155 of its travel stores. Like all NS&I products, Premium Bonds offer investors 100% capital security, backed by HM Treasury, as well as the sense of fun that comes from winning tax-free prizes. Since the first Premium Bonds prize draw in 1957 over 179 million tax–free prizes together worth £11.5 billion have been paid out. Prizes range from £50 to £1 million. There are currently over 550,000 unclaimed Premium Bond prizes, worth over £32 million. There is no time limit on claiming prizes.
