DON’T LET YOUR GARDEN TAKE A SUMMER SIESTA WHEN YOU SET OFF ON HOLIDAY

16 July 2008

As the school year ends and people turn their attention towards a summer getaway, NS&I is encouraging people to remember their gardens before they go. In the haste to be relaxing on holiday, it is easy to forget about the little things to take care of before leaving. With almost a fifth (19%) of those recently surveyed* saying they spend a day a week tending their garden, all that hard work can be easily undone if people fail to put the right measures in place before heading off on a sunny break.

Tim Mack, Head of Marketing and Communications at NS&I, said: “Growing vegetables or fruit in your garden is a great way to make regular savings on your household bills. It is important, however, to protect this investment by putting steps in place to ensure your garden is cared for while you are away on holiday.”

NS&I has put together some top tips for holiday-makers to make sure their gardens don’t take a break while they’re away.

-Keep your vegetables and fruit well hydrated when you are away. For example, find an old soft drink bottle and fill with water - by piercing a small hole in the lid and placing upside down next to your plants the water will slowly seep into the soil.

-Cultivate your local friends and neighbours as well as your garden. Building a good relationship with your neighbours means their green fingers could come in handy when you are away on holiday.  Ask if they are willing to keep an eye on your greenery - be specific about what you want them to do and your garden can to continue to flourish while you are away.

-Seeds need special attention when they’re first planted. Avoid putting out seedlings or seeds just before you go away. If you have recently planted, talk to a neighbour or friend about looking after them while you are away.

-Before you go away, clear any weeds from around fruit bushes and strawberries. This will allow your fruit to breathe more easily.

NS&I will be encouraging people to think about growing their own this coming week, as it sponsors the Gardening in Action marquee at the Tatton Park Flower Show (23-27 July). This feature brings together horticultural experts for five days of lively seminars and debate, perfect for amateur and experienced gardeners eager to pick up tips.

Sponsored by NS&I, this year's Royal Horticultural Society's (RHS) Grow Your Own Veg campaign highlights the fact that anyone can grow their own veg, whether it be a small lettuce** in a container on your desk, or cauliflowers in an old bucket outside. For more information about the show or how to purchase tickets log on to http://www.rhs.org.uk/tatton/2008/index.asp.

For further information regarding the Grow Your Own Veg campaign, events being held at each of the gardens or to sign up for the e-newsletter, visit the Grow Your Own Veg website at www.rhs.org.uk/vegetables or visit www.nsandi.com/rhs.

NS&I also has 10 pairs of tickets to the Tatton Park Flower Show to offer to a media outlet to give away. These tickets are available for any one day to the show between 24-27 July. For more information please contact the NS&I media team.

* According to RHS 2008 ‘Grow Your Own Veg’ survey, sponsored by NS&I.  The online questionnaire, posted on the RHS website, received over 1,600 replies from people interested in how to grow their own veg and in turn lead healthier outdoor lives.

** NS&I can provide, and organise for the distribution of, packets of oriental salad leaf seeds or lettuce pots for competitions.
