Press releaseWINNING NS&I VEG GARDEN REVEALED AT BBC GARDENERS’ WORLD LIVE 17 June 2008On Sunday 15 June, the public decided their favourite of the three NS&I Growing Gardens Today competition winners at BBC Gardeners’ World Live in Birmingham. Claire Potter from East Sussex was awarded the trophy by Carol Klein on the Grow Your Own stage at the event, for her Garden of three R’s that displayed the possibilities that come from thinking imaginatively, having fun and incorporating the three R ’s – reduce, reuse, recycle. Claire’s striking garden incorporated over three dozen different varieties of vegetables that were easy to grow in a small space. She proved it is easy to reduce your spending by growing and eating direct from the garden, not only is it fresher and tastier, but visually appealing. This was the first time that Claire had built a show garden; an interior designer by trade, she spotted the competition while looking on the NS&I website for Premium Bonds. The NS&I competition and BBC Gardeners’ World Live event was also the official launch of her new business venture, Claire Potter Design, based near Brighton. You can find more information about Claire at www.clairepotterdesign.com. Claire told NS&I, “I am so excited to win. The competition and this vote was a great way to get the public involved in thinking about sustainability, recycling and the benefits of vegetable growing – all of which are at the forefront of people’s minds. I want to thank all of the voters and especially NS&I – as I embark on a new business venture, the competition was a great way to get my name out there.” Incorporating both a savings and recycling theme, a standout of Claire’s garden was a water feature powered by the sun using recycled plastic and suspended shredded withdrawn bank notes. In the first stage of the NS&I competition, three innovative and modern designs were selected as winners, in association with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). Each winner received a £5,000 grant to develop their 25m² garden, incorporating growing vegetables as a key focus. This is in conjunction with NS&I’s ongoing sponsorship of the RHS Grow Your Own Veg campaign. All three NS&I competition winners, Claire Potter, Andy Tudbury from Nottingham and Peter Stevens from Leicestershire were also awarded RHS medals at the event. All were awarded a Knightian medal for exhibits of vegetables; Peter Stevens from Leicestershire was awarded a Silver medal, while Andy Tudbury and Claire Potter each received a Bronze.
