MEDIA ALERT: NS&I QUARTERLY SAVINGS SURVEY, ISSUE 11

05 June 2007

Spring 2007 Quarterly Savings Survey main results released on 11 June, under embargo for 15 June 2007

National Savings and Investments (NS&I) will be publishing its eleventh Quarterly Savings Survey on 15 June. The spring 2007 survey provides an incisive and continuous view of the UK savings market, tracking the development of savings trends over both the last quarter and the last year. The survey also covers the predicted savings outlook for the coming months.

The spring 2007 Quarterly Savings Survey will reveal:

  • A seasonal decrease in savings levels
  • The lowest savings aspirations for more than two years
  • Regular savers saving less
  • Men and women saving the same amounts as a percentage of their incomes
  • Britain is a nation of ‘financial fantasists’ banking on earning higher salaries instead of saving or making financial plans.

Barriers to saving

The Quarterly Savings Survey will look in detail at the factors stopping people saving, such as the decline in take-home incomes and increasing demands on people’s finances.

Dax Harkins, senior savings strategist at NS&I, says: “It’s quite disheartening to see that British people are still reluctant to save money, despite the ISA season being in full swing and the attraction of higher savings rates in the marketplace, following recent increases in the Bank of England base rate.”

Media briefings

Interviews will be available on the Savings Survey with Dax Harkins, senior savings strategist at NS&I.
