NATIONAL SAVINGS AND INVESTMENTS SECURE STAR STATUS - 2007 BEST COMPANIES ACCREDITATION STANDARD

26 February 2007

National Savings and Investments (NS&I), the government department responsible for raising cost-effective funding for HM Treasury has achieved one star status (defined as first class) from the 2007 Best Companies Accreditation scheme. NS&I was the only government department to achieve star status.

The Best Companies survey is designed to measure employee engagement and uses 70 questions to gain a comprehensive view.

The one star status was awarded through the Best Companies To Work For survey, which analysed responses from staff at 1,900 UK organisations in both the private and public sector. Only 273 organisations received star status with 124 achieving one star, defined as first class by the organisers, Best Companies Ltd. The organisers research and compile the Sunday Times Best Companies to Work for lists.

The department, based in West London, employs 130 people and is responsible for £78 billion of funds invested by 27 million customers.

The star status accreditation is in addition to NS&I being awarded the Civil Service HR, Learning and Development Award in October 2006 by Gus O’Donnell, Head of the Civil Service.

Jonathan Austin, Chief Executive, Best Companies said:

“NS&I’s 2007 accreditation is an outstanding achievement. It confirms their commitment to the on-going journey of workplace engagement. Our role is to set a rigorous benchmark so that organisations can become even better employers.”

Sandra Postles, HR Director at NS&I:

“This is a great achievement for our agency as it shows that NS&I is seen by its employees as a great organisation to work for. We recognise how important our people are to our business so ensuring they feel engaged, valued for their contribution and that they are listened to is a key part of senior management’s role.

“The reason this status is important to NS&I is because we operate in the mainstream financial services sector so we regularly compete directly against the private sector for skilled staff. Achieving the one star status provides the endorsement from our existing employees. It also means that anyone looking to join NS&I can be confident that they are coming to an organisation which values its employees.”

(3) The Accreditation

The Accreditation, developed by Best Companies is based on a star rating system where one star is first class, two stars are outstanding, and three stars are extraordinary. Organisational successes have been defined using data from the 2007 Best Companies to Work For survey which involved surveying over 100,000 employees from 434 companies. The Best Companies survey is designed to measure employee engagement and uses 70 questions to gain a comprehensive view of employee engagement across eight factors.

Every company that goes for Best Companies Accreditation is given a Best Companies Index score (BCI). This score (on a scale of 1 to 1000) is defined from employees responses to the sixteen key questions within the Best Companies survey. ‘Star Status’ is determined by the ‘BCI’ score and the specific cut-off points for One, Two, and Three Star Accreditation remain constant year on year.
