NATIONAL SAVINGS AND INVESTMENTS PROUD EVENT SPONSOR OF BBC PROMS IN THE PARK

28 April 2006

National Savings and Investments (NS&I), the government-backed savings and investments provider, is proud to announce its event sponsorship of BBC Proms in the Park, which takes place across the nation on 9th September 2006.

NS&I has been a long standing supporter of classical music and this event is hugely important in making classical music accessible to millions of people as well as being one of the best days out in the British music calendar. Recent research by NS&I shows almost half the population (45%) are classical music fans and this event unites the UK in a musical extravaganza, which is attended by 100,000 people and watched by millions more.

A year of celebration

In a year when classical music celebrates the anniversaries of two giant composers Mozart (250th) and Shostakovich (100th), NS&I celebrates the 50th anniversary of the launch of Premium Bonds, its leading savings and investment product.

Trevor Bayley, chief executive of National Savings and Investments, said: “NS&I is delighted to be the sole sponsor of BBC Proms in the Park.  It has become an unmissable event which brings some of the best musical talent to a huge number of people across the UK.

“Our sponsorship of this great British event is part of our celebration of the 50th year of Premium Bonds and will help us raise awareness of our organisation and our range of savings and investments to a much wider audience.”

Premium Bond 50th

Premium Bonds, which were first launched in 1956, are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. Introduced as a way to make saving more attractive, they are more popular than ever before with 23 million people holding over £30 billion worth of Bonds. A British institution, they combine the sense of fun associated with winning tax-free* prizes with the peace of mind that your investment is 100% secure.

BBC Proms in the Park

Over the past 10 years, BBC Proms in the Park has established itself as an integral part of the traditional Last Night of the Proms celebrations and, in total, almost a million people have passed through the gates at venues across the country. The idea of holding an additional Prom in Hyde Park to complement the events going on in the Royal Albert Hall was born out of a wish to extend the magic of the Last Night of the Proms to the widest possible audience. BBC Proms in the Park has since grown to be a nationwide extravaganza with up to five cities taking part at a time, across all four nations. In 2006, there will again be events in London, Belfast, Swansea, Glasgow and Manchester, plus even more opportunities to join in via the BBC Big Screens in other major UK cities.
