BRITAIN'S TELEPHONE HABITS REVEALED

29 March 2004

1 in 6 use the loo while on the phone

Do you know what your best friend is doing when you're chatting with them on the phone? Research from National Savings and Investments (NS&I) has flushed out the nation's most common telephone habits.

On the bog and bone
One in six Brits confessed to using the toilet while talking on the phone, suggesting perhaps that, these days, some people no longer worry about carrying out even the most intimate of tasks in private.

People from the North East are nearly five times (24%) as likely to chat from the smallest room in the house, compared to only 5% of Scots who admit to having a 'wee' chat.

Topping the list of on-the-phone activities are watching TV (57%) and doodling (46%). (For full results see Notes to Editors)

Short on time
It seems lack of time is the key factor behind many of the telephone habits unearthed in the research. People admitted to carrying out a range of practical tasks while on the phone; a third (34%) admitting to cooking, a quarter (24%) to cleaning and one in five (22%) to shopping.

Lack of time may be a curse of modern day life, but imagine your boss calling you while he or she was in the bath - NS&I's research found one in 10 (13%) confessed to taking a bath while chatting on the phone.

Power and control
Psychologist Donna Dawson said, "It would appear that we save ourselves time by doing two things at once, but, with activities such as bathing or sitting on the toilet, there are deeper motives at work: because the person on the other end doesn't know what we are really doing, it gives us a sense of power and control, as well as the mischievous thrill of doing something slightly illicit. However, we may have to change our ways when video phones become the norm!"

Jill Waters, head of telephone sales at National Savings and Investments, said, "National Savings and Investments receives around 2 million calls a year, so that means 300,000 people could be sitting on the loo while taking out an investment with us over the phone!

"The great advantage for NS&I customers is that they can invest from the comfort of their armchair or bath tub, day or night, any day of the week, safe in the knowledge that their savings are 100% secure, and so is their privacy!"
