SUNDERLAND TOPS PREMIUM BOND PRIZE LEAGUE

24 February 2004

LUCKIEST TOWNS 2003/04

Sunderland is Britain's luckiest town for winning top Premium Bond prizes in 2003/04, knocking Dumfries off of the top spot. Aberdeen, Bolton and Hull were second, third and fourth, respectively, with Motherwell, The Western Isles and Llandrindod Wells being the unluckiest (see Map on page 5).

The league table (below) shows the top 10 towns across the UK for winning top Premium Bond prizes between March 2003 and February 2004 as a proportion of the number of Premium Bonds held in their area. The analysis was based on the top 121 postcodes in the UK.

Across the UK, 23 million people own Premium Bonds worth £23 billion, all of which are entered into each monthly draw winning 770,000 prizes worth over £40 million from £50 to the jackpot £1 million.

Both Sunderland and Aberdeen's luck changed vastly in 2003, Sunderland improved its position on last year rising from 60th to 1st and Aberdeen improved from 79th to 2nd.

Central London West, Slough and Worcester were the highest climbers jumping by more then 100 places to reach the top 10.

UNLUCKIEST TOWNS 2003/04

Sunderland might be the luckiest town, but Motherwell has been the unluckiest in the last year, taking the title from the Western Isles the previous year. Blackburn was the highest faller from 4th in 2002/03 to 110th in 2003/04. Fortunately, luck does change as can be seen by huge rises for Central London West, Slough and Worcester.

Gill Cattanach, marketing director at National Savings and Investments comments:

"The top 10 show that luck in winning Premium Bond prizes is spread across the UK with places like Sunderland and Aberdeen luckier than the rest in the past year.

"Every one of the 23 million people owning Premium Bonds has the chance to win but who knows what combinations ERNIE, the Premium Bond number cruncher, will choose to be the luckiest over the coming year."
