CHRISTMAS CHEER THAT LASTS BEYOND NEW YEAR

05 December 2003

Britons say the worst thing about Christmas shopping is finding the right gift, according to a survey from National Savings and Investments (NS&I).

One in four (25%) said finding the right gift is the worst thing about seasonal shopping. The amount of choice available, overblown expectations of recipients and wanting to give a better present than the previous year could also add to shoppers' worries.

2Crowded shops
3Not having enough money

Christmas crowds

People are often incredibly busy during the festive period and the added worry of finding the right gift in crowded shops while the costs mount up can make it even more stressful. Crowded shops are most disliked by one in five (21%) people as the constant buffeting and relentless bustle creates an unpleasant environment in which to shop. Not having enough money is the worst thing, according to one in six (16%) of those questioned, who may be unable to afford the presents they wish to give. One in ten (12%) hate queuing as it wastes valuable minutes during an already hectic time.

Christmas concerns

One-third (30%) of those aged 65 and above worry about finding the right gift, making them the most concerned of all the age groups. Only one fifth (20%) of 16 to 24 year-olds feel under pressure to choose the perfect item. This could be due to the amount of free time each age-group has, as 16 to 24 year-olds often have busier lifestyles than 65 year-olds, who may put more time and effort into choosing the right gift.

Regionally, the East Midlands is the most concerned with one in three (30%) residents believing that finding the correct present is the worst thing about Christmas shopping, compared to Scotland where only one in seven (14%) of the population worry.

Sarah Williams, customer offer manager at National Savings and Investments said:

"At Christmas it can be stressful to choose a present for children amongst all of the toys, CDs and DVDs on offer. This year we're offering the chance to cut through the chaos of Christmas shopping and select a gift that children won't outgrow.

"NS&I Gift Packs are available giving details of three savings products which make ideal presents for children. By investing now it may help them in later life with the purchase of their first car, education or setting up a home."
