One lucky resident from Tyne and Wear has won the £1 million Premium Bond jackpot. ERNIE, the Premium Bond number generator, worked his way through billions of Premium Bond numbers before picking the winning combination. The winner was told last night in person by Agent Million, National Savings and Investments' mystery agent who pays a personal visit to the winner. This is the third winner from Tyne and Wear since the introduction of the £1 million Premium Bond jackpot since the top prize was introduced in 1994, and October's winner becomes the 115th Premium Bond millionaire overall. In Tyne and Wear, 342,000 people own Premium Bonds worth £173million. There are approximately 4,100 unclaimed prizes in the region, worth £248,000. This month's winning jackpot number was bought in July 2003. The popularity of Premium Bonds has grown dramatically over the past five years as the amount invested has doubled to £22 billion. Like all National Savings and Investments (NS&I) products, Premium Bonds offer investors 100% security, backed by HM Treasury, as well as the sense of fun that comes from winning tax free prizes. The prize fund rate is currently 2.25% per annum tax free, equivalent to 2.81% p.a. gross for a basic rate tax payer and 3.75% p.a. gross for a higher rate tax payer. Since the first draw in 1957, ERNIE has given away over 104 million prizes worth £6.7billion. Prizes range from £50 to £1million. There is currently £23 million in unclaimed prizes.
