One lucky resident from the East Riding of Yorkshire has landed the big catch this month - the £1 million Premium Bonds jackpot. ERNIE, the Premium Bond number generator, trawled his way through billions of Premium Bond numbers before hooking the winning combination. The winner was told last night in person by Agent Million, the mystery agent who pays a personal visit to the winner. This is the East Riding of Yorkshire's first ever winner of the £1 million Premium Bond jackpot since the top prize was introduced in 1994, and September's winner becomes the 114th Premium Bond millionaire overall. The prize fund rate is currently 2.25% per annum tax free, equivalent to 2.81% p.a. gross for a basic rate tax payer and 3.75% p.a. gross for a higher rate tax payer. In the East Riding of Yorkshire, 186,000 people own Premium Bonds worth £110,700,000. There are approximately 2,400 unclaimed prizes in the region, worth just over £142,000. This month's winning jackpot number was purchased in July 2003. The popularity of Premium Bonds has grown dramatically over the past five years as the amount invested has doubled to £21 billion. Like all National Savings and Investments (NS&I) products, Premium Bonds offer investors 100% security, backed by HM Treasury, as well as the sense of fun that comes from winning tax free prizes. Since the first draw in 1957, ERNIE has given away over 104 million prizes worth £6.65 billion. Prizes range from £50 to £1million. There is currently £22.7 million in unclaimed prizes.
