Press releaseSURREY RESIDENT FIRST PAST THE POST AS ERNIE PICKS AUGUST’S PREMIUM BOND MILLIONIARE01 August 2003Winning number 42CV 317075 ERNIE was under starter’s orders for generating August’s Premium Bond jackpot winning number from Surrey. The winner was told last night in person by Agent Million. It’s the 11th millionaire for the region since the million pound prize was introduced in 1994, and August’s winner becomes the 113th Premium Bond millionaire overall. The prize fund rate is currently 2.25% per annum tax free, equivalent to 2.81% p.a. gross for a basic rate tax payer and 3.75% p.a. gross for a higher rate tax payer. 545,000 residents in Surrey own Premium Bonds worth £661 million. There are 10,063 unclaimed prizes worth just over £593,000, including 1 worth £5,000 and 14 worth £1,000. This year Surrey residents have already won 170,000 prizes worth over £9 million. This month’s winning jackpot number was only purchased in June 2003. The popularity of Premium Bonds has grown dramatically over the past five years as the amount invested has doubled to £21 billion.
