Families, Finance and the Future - 2009 research report
As part of NS&I's continuing research of savings behaviour in the UK, the Future Foundation has been commissioned to undertake a study to understand the evolving relationship between families and their finances.
This study looks at how the contemporary British family interacts with finance, their motivations and behaviour, as well as the web of financial inter-relationships with family members. It then looks forward to the year 2029, illustrating that the new model for looking at flows of money between relatives will have outlasted traditional family shapes.
This report illustrates how useful the long-term perspective can be – it shows that technological commuication will aid the continuation of financial relationships, even where there is no traditional geographic or biological bond. The coming years will see us enter a very different world of family finance, one where ties of money and financial knowledge will become increasingly important.
