2009 Grow Your Own calendar

Welcome to the NS&I growing and savings calendar. Here you will find helpful hints and tips on how you can make both your gardening and financial efforts work better for you.

Find out when the best times are to budget for the months ahead and learn the key dates for growing, pruning and harvesting different fruit and vegetables.

As we all try to find ways to save money, growing your own fruit and vegetables is an obvious choice. This calendar will be updated every month to assist you along the way.

July

Enjoy the cash you’ve been saving all year – after all, saving is really just learning to spend more effectively. Soft fruit planted earlier in the year will be ready for you to enjoy in the sun, or freeze for later in the year.

Pick your strawberries when daytime temperatures are high which gives juicy, sweet-flavoured fruits. Pick them when the fruit has a white tip and is slightly unripe. Keep them for two or three days in the fridge at two to four degrees Celsius.

Prepare for the rest of the year. Gather herbs for drying, hanging them up in a dark, airy place so you can use them for cooking throughout the year.

Care for your savings by making sure that you top them up regularly, and make sure to regularly water and feed greenhouse crops such as tomatoes and cucumbers.
