Grow your own - 2009 calendar

Welcome to the NS&I growing and savings calendar. Here you will find helpful hints and tips on how you can make both your gardening and financial efforts work better for you.

Find out when the best times are to budget for the months ahead and learn the key dates for growing, pruning and harvesting different fruit and vegetables.

As we all try to save money, growing your own fruit and vegetables is an obvious choice and this calendar will be updated every month to assist you along the way.

February

Cover up to keep warm - cultivate and prepare seedbeds, covering them with clear polythene, cloches or fleece to warm up the soil before sowing. To keep yourself warm, consider using less central heating and covering up with an extra jumper - it’s better for the environment and will help you save money too.

Prune large apple and pear trees to clear congested branches. Prune your spending habits too - did you use that gym membership last year? Will you still need it now? Or is gardening providing you with enough exercise?
