![]() | 2009 Grow Your Own calendarWelcome to the NS&I growing and savings calendar. Here you will find helpful hints and tips on how you can make both your gardening and financial efforts work better for you. Find out when the best times are to budget for the months ahead and learn the key dates for growing, pruning and harvesting different fruit and vegetables. As we all try to find ways to save money, growing your own fruit and vegetables is an obvious choice. This calendar will be updated every month to assist you along the way. AprilSpring-clean. When it’s spring-cleaning season, why not get rid of any unwanted possessions. Think about selling them at a car boot sale, or perhaps advertise on a free ad website, in a free ad paper or at a local corner shop. Put the money from their sale into your savings account. Make sure your fruit and vegetables stay fresh too, so watch out for pests such as slugs and snails as the temperature rises. Budget. While the Government presents its budget, why not set your own savings budget, with quarterly targets? Make sure you budget for the months ahead too, and work out how many crops you will need to plant. Lettuce, leeks, radish, turnip, and peas should be planted in well-prepared soil, while you should put tomatoes, aubergines and peppers in greenhouse borders or growing bags. Plant your strawberries in hanging baskets for an eye catching display. Key dates6 April: The start of the new tax year 22 April: Budget day
