NS&I AND RHS JOIN FORCES TO HELP BRITONS GROW AND SAVE

27 February 2008

NS&I today announces its sponsorship of the UK’s leading gardening charity, the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) ‘Grow Your Own Veg’ 2008 campaign.

These two popular British organisations have come together to help people grow, whether it be carrots and potatoes or their savings “pots” - their golden carats.

This partnership works well for the British public, because of the many similarities between growing vegetables and growing savings.  In both cases, putting a little in can result in great rewards, but more importantly, everyone can do both.  Growing your own vegetables is possible anywhere and similarly everyone, no matter what age, should be striving to save a few extra pounds each week.

The sponsorship also builds on the successful relationship that NS&I have had with the RHS for the past three years, including participation in the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and NS&I’s involvement in Hampton Court Palace Flower Show where in 2007 NS&I sponsored Quaglino’s Kitchen.

john Prout, Sales and Retention Director at NS&I, explains: “Savers and gardeners both know that the best rewards come with time.  In both cases, growing just a little, either seeds or money, will reap benefits in the future.  Everyone can gain rewards from producing vegetables for the dinner table, or interest for the savings pot, and by working with the RHS we aim to help the nation achieve healthy finances as well as a healthy diet.”

The Grow Your Own Veg campaign, now in its second year, will show that growing vegetables is easy and fun, whether in a large garden, allotment or an urban space. The RHS will be running a series of events throughout the year, demonstrating the benefits of home-grown produce and showing how easy it can be to grow your own vegetables, even if the only space you have is a window sill in a city flat.

Richard Hunt, Corporate Development Manager at the RHS, adds “NS&I is a perfect partner for the Grow Your Own Veg campaign.  We are delighted to be working together and hope to inspire the British public to utilise whatever space or means they have to get growing.”

About the Grow Your Own Veg campaign

This year’s campaign will focus on growing vegetables in containers, to highlight that having a big garden – or any garden at all - is not the most important thing when it comes to growing vegetables.  Events include:

  • Free Grow Your Own Veg open day at each of the four RHS Gardens on Saturday 8 March.  With free entry, each garden will be hosting a variety of activities from talks and tours to demonstrations and the chance to get your hands dirty.
  • Other themed events at RHS gardens where you can learn how to use the seasonal veg you are growing to create mouth-watering recipes.
  • ‘Taste of Autumn’ events at RHS gardens, enjoy the fruits of the Autumn harvest and learn how to cook, preserve and store what you have grown.

For further information regarding the campaign or events being held at each of the gardens, and to sign up for the e-newsletter, visit the Grow Your Own Veg website at http://www.rhs.org.uk/vegetables.
